The UK’s average annual rainfall is about 1,100mm, compared with less than 300mm in Pakistan or double figures in Egypt. However, despite our winter storms, significant parts of the UK are staring down the barrel of empty water butts. Much of that four-figure rainfall average is propped up by the rainy Highlands of Scotland, Wales and northern England. In south-east England, where I live, the average annual rainfall lingers about 600 mm – comparable with Lebanon or Kenya, and drier than Sydney, Australia. This also happens to be the UK’s most populated area, with about 18 million inhabitants packed into just 19,000 sq km, including London’s 1,500 sq km. And it’s drying up, fast. Government figures show that, in England, 28% of groundwater aquifers, the layers of porous sand and rock that hold water underground, and up to 18% of rivers and reservoirs, have more water taken out than is put back in. This is clearly unsustainable.

The Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles has re-acquired the domain name written on 798,000 Maryland license plates meant to commemorate the War of 1812 but was recently in the hands of a Filipino online casino showing a scantily-clad lady advertising attractive betting rates. The DMV paid $1,000 for the URL starspangled200.org, according to a spokesperson.
The URL, which still appears on hundreds of thousands of Maryland license plates, now redirects to the DMV home page instead of its original purpose as an informational website on the War of 1812.

A grand jury has indicted former U.S. Marine Daniel Penny in connection with the chokehold death of Jordan Neely aboard a subway train.
The exact charges will not be unsealed until Penny appears in court at a later date, the sources said. Penny was initially arrested on a second-degree manslaughter charge.
Video showed Penny, 24, putting Neely in a chokehold on May 1. Several witnesses observed Neely making threats, assistant district attorney Joshua Steinglass told the judge.
Some witnesses told police that Neely was yelling and harassing passengers on the train, authorities said. Police sources told ABC News that Penny was not specifically being threatened by Neely when he intervened and that Neely had not become violent and had not been threatening anyone in particular.

Warren County residents want a special election to vote for a new county auditor after it came to light that newly appointed auditor David Whipple has a history of promoting conspiracy theories about 9/11 and the 2020 election.
In Iowa, county auditors oversee elections.
Whipple, who has no experience in government, was appointed to serve as auditor by the three-member Warren County Board of Supervisors during a special meeting on June 6. His term expires Dec. 31, 2024.
Besides Whipple’s lack of experience, Warren County residents and the county’s Democratic Party became more concerned with his appointment after they became aware of Whipple’s since-deleted social media posts where he shared various conspiracy theories about the election, QAnon, and even the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.
