If you’re not logged into your Twitter account and try to view a tweet, you’ll be presented with a sign-in screen. And if you don’t want to have an account on the bird app, too bad!
Twitter hasn’t commented on this change, and given how sloppy the platform has been since Elon Musk’s takeover, it might just be a glitch. However, in a time when Twitter is struggling to grow its user base, it’s possible that this is a tactic to force silent lurkers into creating an account.
Like many of Twitter’s recent changes, this could easily backfire. If tweets aren’t publicly accessible, search engine algorithms could rank the site’s content lower, meaning that fewer people would be directed to the site from Google. Also, it’s just kind of annoying.

In the ballroom of the five star Savoy hotel on the Strand in central London, the super-rich and their advisers were this week advised that they may soon need to watch out for people with “pitchforks and torches” unless they do more to use their fortunes to help the millions struggling with the cost of living crisis.
At an investment conference organised by Spear’s wealth management magazine, members of the global elite and their financial teams were told by progressive advisers that there was a “real risk of actual insurrection” and “civil disruption” if the yawning inequality gap between rich and poor was allowed to widen as a result of energy and food price hikes hitting squeezed households.
Julia Davies, a founding member of Patriotic Millionaires UK, a group of super-rich people calling for the introduction of a wealth tax, warned that global poverty and the climate emergency were going to get “so much worse” unless the wealthy did more to help poorer citizens.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday urged parents to keep kid rioters off the streets, adding that some young people looked to be emulating violent video games that had "intoxicated" them, news agency AFP reported. Speaking after chairing a crisis security meeting, the 45-year-old head of state stated that around one-third of those detained over three nights of riots were "young, or very young."
"It's the responsibility of parents to keep them at home. It's not the state's job to act in their place," President Emmanuel Macron stated.

Federal officials have told peach growers in Georgia they will issue a disaster designation for this year’s peach crop. The state lost over 85% of its peaches this spring.
At the state Farmer's Market in Forest Park, Georgia peaches are almost as scarce as Halloween pumpkins and Christmas trees, at a time when they are typically plentiful.
When you do find them, prices are high. One vendor offered Georgia peaches at one dollar per peach.

In my 3 decade-long career being a weather forecaster, and now Chief Meteorologist and Climate Specialist, I have never observed so many of Earth’s vital signs blinking red. Meteorologists and climate scientists all around the world are in awe by the simultaneous literal “off the charts” records being broken.
Yes, it’s climate change.
The steady trend of rising temperatures over the last few decades has placed Earth’s baseline climate so high that achieving these extremes – which used to be rare if not unheard of – is now expected when conditions are ripe. And right now they are, with El Niño’s added heat and several other concurrent, varying natural climate patterns.
So, to be more specific, it’s climate change – with other natural patterns piled on top.
With El Niño now in place, we are getting a glimpse of just how far we can force the climate system, with never before observed heights achieved. Many more are on the way for 2023-2024 as El Niño gets stronger and more heat is released from the oceans into the Atmosphere.

Earlier this week, Fran Drescher, the president of the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), announced that the union’s negotiations with the studios for a new contract were going swimmingly. The union’s members had overwhelmingly voted to authorize their leaders to call a strike when their current contract expired on June 30th unless their concerns were met, but Drescher’s missive indicated that a deal was close at hand and no strike would be necessary.
Yesterday, 300 of the union’s most well-known members—including Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Quinta Brunson, Rami Malek, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Brendan Fraser, Neil Patrick Harris, Amy Schumer, Amy Poehler, Glenn Close, John Leguizamo, and Ben Stiller—released a statement urging the union to hold out for far more than its leaders appeared to be willing to accept. Noting the massive growth of streaming (a medium that generally undercompensates those involved in the creative and production processes), the threat of AI, and the new requirement that non-star actors record their own auditions, Streep and Co. declared the current moment to be “an unprecedented inflection point in our industry, and what might be considered a good deal in any other years is simply not enough.”
