France Riots: President Macron Blames Video Games For Unrest
    https://news.abplive.com/news/world/france-riots-president-macron-blames-video-games-for-unrest-calls-on-parents-to-help-says-report-1612734
French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday urged parents to keep kid rioters off the streets, adding that some young people looked to be emulating violent video games that had "intoxicated" them, news agency AFP reported. Speaking after chairing a crisis security meeting, the 45-year-old head of state stated that around one-third of those detained over three nights of riots were "young, or very young." "It's the responsibility of parents to keep them at home. It's not the state's job to act in their place," President Emmanuel Macron stated.

Disaster designation issued for Georgia peach crop
    https://www.11alive.com/article/news/local/disaster-designation-georgia-peach-growers/85-2041abcc-2c69-442f-aa57-6e3e0388e353
Federal officials have told peach growers in Georgia they will issue a disaster designation for this year’s peach crop. The state lost over 85% of its peaches this spring. At the state Farmer's Market in Forest Park, Georgia peaches are almost as scarce as Halloween pumpkins and Christmas trees, at a time when they are typically plentiful. When you do find them, prices are high. One vendor offered Georgia peaches at one dollar per peach.

‘Off the charts’: Earth’s vital signs are going haywire
    https://www.wfla.com/weather/climate-classroom/off-the-charts-earths-vital-signs-are-going-haywire/
In my 3 decade-long career being a weather forecaster, and now Chief Meteorologist and Climate Specialist, I have never observed so many of Earth’s vital signs blinking red. Meteorologists and climate scientists all around the world are in awe by the simultaneous literal “off the charts” records being broken. Yes, it’s climate change. The steady trend of rising temperatures over the last few decades has placed Earth’s baseline climate so high that achieving these extremes – which used to be rare if not unheard of – is now expected when conditions are ripe. And right now they are, with El Niño’s added heat and several other concurrent, varying natural climate patterns. So, to be more specific, it’s climate change – with other natural patterns piled on top. With El Niño now in place, we are getting a glimpse of just how far we can force the climate system, with never before observed heights achieved. Many more are on the way for 2023-2024 as El Niño gets stronger and more heat is released from the oceans into the Atmosphere.

AIis killing the old web, and the new web struggles to be born
    https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/26/23773914/ai-large-language-models-data-scraping-generation-remaking-web
In recent months, the signs and portents have been accumulating with increasing speed. Google is trying to kill the 10 blue links. Twitter is being abandoned to bots and blue ticks. There’s the junkification of Amazon and the enshittification of TikTok. Layoffs are gutting online media. A job posting looking for an “AI editor” expects “output of 200 to 250 articles per week.” ChatGPT is being used to generate whole spam sites. Etsy is flooded with “AI-generated junk.” Chatbots cite one another in a misinformation ouroboros. LinkedIn is using AI to stimulate tired users. Snapchat and Instagram hope bots will talk to you when your friends don’t. Redditors are staging blackouts. Stack Overflow mods are on strike. The Internet Archive is fighting off data scrapers, and “AI is tearing Wikipedia apart.” The old web is dying, and the new web struggles to be born. The web is always dying, of course; it’s been dying for years, killed by apps that divert traffic from websites or algorithms that reward supposedly shortening attention spans. But in 2023, it’s dying again — and, as the litany above suggests, there’s a new catalyst at play: AI.

What’s Turned Hollywood Stars Into Labor Militants
    https://prospect.org/api/content/91c38610-16b8-11ee-8f14-12163087a831/
Earlier this week, Fran Drescher, the president of the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), announced that the union’s negotiations with the studios for a new contract were going swimmingly. The union’s members had overwhelmingly voted to authorize their leaders to call a strike when their current contract expired on June 30th unless their concerns were met, but Drescher’s missive indicated that a deal was close at hand and no strike would be necessary. Yesterday, 300 of the union’s most well-known members—including Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Quinta Brunson, Rami Malek, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Brendan Fraser, Neil Patrick Harris, Amy Schumer, Amy Poehler, Glenn Close, John Leguizamo, and Ben Stiller—released a statement urging the union to hold out for far more than its leaders appeared to be willing to accept. Noting the massive growth of streaming (a medium that generally undercompensates those involved in the creative and production processes), the threat of AI, and the new requirement that non-star actors record their own auditions, Streep and Co. declared the current moment to be “an unprecedented inflection point in our industry, and what might be considered a good deal in any other years is simply not enough.”

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. It’s not clear whether Surovikin faces any charges or where he is being held, reflecting the opaque world of the Kremlin’s politics and uncertainty after the revolt.
