Several plaintiffs affiliated with a national Democratic redistricting group on Thursday asked the Ohio Supreme Court to find the state’s newly passed legislative redistricting plan to be unconstitutionally gerrymandered.
It’s the first legal challenge filed against the new state legislative maps passed unanimously by the Ohio Redistricting Commission last week.
The new redistricting plan, passed Sept. 27, gives Republicans an advantage in 61 of 99 Ohio House districts and 23 of 33 state Senate districts, according to State Auditor Keith Faber, the commission’s Republican co-chair. The two Democrats on the seven-member commission voted for the plan, saying (among other things) that it was preferable to Republicans passing a map even more favorable to them.

A military judge at Guantanamo Bay has ruled one of the 9/11 defendants too mentally ill to stand trial, after a military medical panel found that the man's torture in CIA custody years earlier has rendered him psychotic.
Al-Shibh has complained for years since his transfer to the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, that his guards were attacking him, including by invisible rays, so as to deprive him of sleep and cause him pain.
Defense attorney David Bruck argued at a hearing by the military court Tuesday for McCall to accept the medical panel’s finding that al-Shibh’s mental issues were too severe for him to meaningfully take part in his defense.
Bruck pointed to what he said was al-Shibh’s solitary confinement over four years in detention at CIA black sites, and torture that included his being forced to stand sleepless for as long as three days at a time, naked except for a diaper and doused with cold water in air-conditioned rooms, for the man’s lasting belief that his American guards were still conspiring to deprive him of sleep.
Bruck indicated that al-Shibh would be expected to remain in custody if found incompetent to stand trial.

Center for Biological Diversity: STARR COUNTY, Texas — The Biden administration announced today that for the first time it will waive environmental, public health and cultural resource protection laws to fast-track construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall in Texas. The administration says it will take “immediate action to construct barriers and roads” along the border, including through the fragile Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge and neighboring lands.

Microsoft’s Bing Image Creator creator has been around since March, using “AI” technology to generate images based on whatever the user types. You never know where this sort of thing might lead, though, and in recent weeks users have been using the tool to create images of Kirby and other popular characters flying planes into skyscrapers. Microsoft doesn’t want you digitally recreating the September 11 attacks, but because AI tools are impossible to control, it seems unlikely it can stop users who really want to see SpongeBob committing acts of simulated terrorism.

Meta has started slowly rolling out its new AI-generated stickers for Messenger, and the results so far are totally unhinged.
The company, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, announced that it would be introducing AI tools to Messenger last week, starting with a limited rollout in the US. On Tuesday night, examples of the kinds of stickers the AI tool generates based on user prompts went viral, and it’s easy to see why. Montreal-based artist Pier-Olivier Desbiens posted a few examples, and they include: Nintendo character Waluigi holding a rifle, a Mickey Mouse-toilet hybrid, child soldiers, a nude Justin Trudeau bending over, and a busty Karl Marx wearing a dress. Desbiens used Meta’s tool to generate stickers of other well-known characters as well, such as a pregnant Shrek and Elmo holding a knife. Stickers generated by other users included Hilary Clinton in jail and President Xi Jinping morphed with Winnie the Pooh—a notorious insult directed at Xi by detractors.
