But critics of the strategy are plentiful as well. Benson’s Stanford colleague Mark Jacobson, an atmospheric scientist, calls the program “a boondoggle” and “a complete waste of money.” He argues that because DAC requires so much energy to capture CO2, purify it, and pump it underground for permanent storage, it is one of the most expensive and inefficient ways to sequester carbon. A better climate strategy, Jacobson says, would be to simply spend the money on building out renewable energy faster, so that coal and natural gas electricity plants can be retired more quickly.

Popular among visitors to Hawaii, the hotels and resorts lining the South Maui beaches in Kihei and Wailea are lush and green, with many pools, water slides and fountains. But this is all a facade.
The coastline is actually dry, receiving less than 10 inches of water per year. It gets the majority of its water from Central Maui — the area of Kahului and around Wailuku — where residents are sometimes urged to conserve.
“The fact is that the people where the water originates are hurting for water,” Lucienne de Naie, chairperson for Sierra Club Maui Group, told SFGATE. “There are definitely shortages of water from overtourism, and those shortages of water are impacting an area we call Na Wai Eha.”
In English, Na Wai Eha means “the Four Waters.” It refers to the four streams and rivers that flow out of the West Maui Mountains to Central Maui. Hawaiians used the abundant resource to cultivate taro farms and farm fishponds for subsistence living, but that changed following colonization and the sugar plantation industry. Today, much of the water is diverted, and Central Maui residents continue to dispute its allocations.

Prosecutors on Thursday agreed to dismiss their case against a transgender man who was beaten by a sheriff’s deputy outside a Los Angeles-area 7-Eleven, then criminally charged for resisting arrest.
Store surveillance footage obtained by The Times showed Deputy Joseph Benza repeatedly punching Emmett Brock as the Whittier man begged for his life. The arrest stemmed from a traffic stop the deputy said was based on an air freshener he’d spotted hanging from Brock’s rearview mirror and obstructing the view of the road.
Afterward, the department cleared Benza of wrongdoing but Brock lost his teaching job due to the pending charges against him. On Thursday, he said that news of the dismissal came as a relief and that his lawyer still plans to ask a court to declare him factually innocent.
“I am feeling relieved that the district attorney made the right choice and chose justice,” Brock said. “But I will feel more relieved when I get my job back.”

Right after James Porter received his new Tesla compact SUV — bought in large part for its advertised 303-mile range — he charged it up and hit the road to visit family. Less than 100 miles later, he arrived with a charge of only 40%, according to a lawsuit accusing the electric-vehicle maker of inflating driving-range estimates and dodging owners’ complaints.
Porter of Petaluma paid $72,000 for his Model Y after test driving one in Vallejo, and received it in June 2022, according to the lawsuit. At no time during the testing or purchasing process was he told that “the advertised range did not account for normal driving conditions or that it was exaggerated,” the lawsuit claims.
During his family trip, “his vehicle lost approximately 182 miles of range — despite only driving 92 miles,” the lawsuit contends.
Porter and two southern California Tesla Model 3 sedan owners who are co-plaintiffs in the lawsuit, Bryan Perez and Dro Estepanian, are seeking class-action status to bring into the lawsuit everyone in California who has bought a new Tesla Model 3, Y, S or X.
