Inside the vast digital campaign by Hindu nationalists to inflame India
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/09/26/hindu-nationalist-social-media-hate-campaign/
India’s BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and affiliated Hindu nationalist groups have perfected using social media to spread of inflammatory, often false and bigoted material on an industrial scale, earning both envy and condemnation beyond India’s borders. At first, the WhatsApp messages touted roads paved, schools built, free food distributed to the poor — all the usual pitches from a government during election season. But as May drew closer, the messages turned darker. One viral post that landed in Sachin Patil’s iPhone listed the names of 24 local Hindu men it said were murdered by Muslims. Another mass message warned of Hindu girls being groomed by Muslim men to join the Islamic State. Yet another viral post that reached Patil made an urgent appeal to vote: “If the BJP is here, your children will be safe. Hindus will be safe.” By the time election day arrived here in south India’s Karnataka state, Patil, a 25-year-old bank teller in a sleepy village outside Mangaluru, said he was receiving 120 political messages a day in six WhatsApp groups. “They were definitely a reminder,” Patil said, to cast a ballot for the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party that governs India.

North Korea to expel U.S. soldier who ran across the border
    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/north-korea-expel-us-soldier-travis-king-crossed-border-rcna117553
Travis King, the U.S. Army private who intentionally ran across the border into North Korea this summer, is back in U.S. custody, an American official said Wednesday, shortly after the isolated East Asian country said it would expel the soldier. “U.S. officials have secured the return of Private Travis King from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea," Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder said in a statement. He went on to thank the U.S. military personnel who worked to "bring Private King home," as well as the governments of Sweden and China. King, 23, bolted across the heavily armed border July 18 during a public tour of the demilitarized zone between North Korea and South Korea. A statement reported by the state-run news agency KCNA said King had confessed he "illegally intruded" into North Korean territory because “he was disillusioned about inhumane treatment and racial discrimination” in the Army, as well as the "inequality existing within the American Society," KCNA said.

YouTube prankster says he had no idea he was scaring man who shot him
    https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/northern-virginia/youtube-prankster-says-he-had-no-idea-he-was-scaring-man-who-shot-him/3431067/
A Northern Virginia jury has heard testimony from a YouTube prankster who was shot earlier this year by one of his targets. Tanner Cook survived the shot to the chest he received in April at Dulles Town Center in Loudoun County, west of the nation’s capital. Alan Colie, a delivery driver who was the target of the prank, is charged with aggravated malicious wounding and two firearms counts. He has pleaded not guilty. Cook told jurors Tuesday that he had no idea Colie was scared or angered by the prank until he was shot. He said he tries to confuse the targets of his pranks more than anger them.

They associate marriage with the union of two families as well as buying a home and starting a family. And, right now, those three goals seem unrealistic. “My mom and her parents don’t like each other, the property market is not good and it is too expensive to have a child,” Zhang explained.

Judge rules Donald Trump defrauded banks, insurers while building real estate empire
    https://news.yahoo.com/judge-rules-donald-trump-defrauded-202326707.html
A judge ruled Tuesday that Donald Trump committed fraud for years while building the real estate empire that catapulted him to fame and the White House, and he ordered some of the former president's companies removed from his control and dissolved. Judge Arthur Engoron, ruling in a civil lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, found that Trump and his company deceived banks, insurers and others by massively overvaluing his assets and exaggerating his net worth on paperwork used in making deals and securing loans. Engoron ordered that some of Trump’s business licenses be rescinded as punishment, making it difficult or impossible for them to do business in New York, and said he would continue to have an independent monitor oversee Trump Organization operations.

    https://torontosun.com/news/world/toxic-culture-womens-chess-master-claims-she-was-raped-at-tournament
Chevannes called the chess community an “insular world” where people are judged by their playing skills and women are often belittled. “Women are seen as inferior, they genuinely believe men are superior to women in every way — including intellectually,” she said. “If you beat someone, it’s described as you raped them.”

Poland moves to extradite Ukrainian SS veteran who was applauded in Canada
    https://www.politico.eu/article/yaroslav-hunka-poland-extradite-ukrainian-ss-veteran-canada/
Poland’s Education Minister Przemysław Czarnek said Tuesday he has “taken steps” toward extraditing Yaroslav Hunka, a 98-year-old Ukrainian Nazi veteran who was honored by Canadian parliamentarians last week. During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Canada last Friday, House Speaker Anthony Rota introduced Hunka as a Canadian-Ukrainian war hero, prompting a standing ovation from parliamentarians. But the tribute triggered a wave of criticism from Jewish organizations, advocacy groups and leaders across the world, because Hunka fought with the First Ukrainian Division — also known as the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division, which served under command of the Nazis in Adolf Hitler’s World War II fight against Russia’s Red Army. “In view of the scandalous events in the Canadian Parliament, which involved honoring, in the presence of President Zelenskyy, a member of the criminal Nazi SS Galizien formation, I have taken steps towards the possible extradition of this man to Poland,” Czarnek said on X, formerly Twitter. In a letter to Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance, a body that researches and investigates past crimes against the Polish nation, Czarnek asked it to “urgently examine” whether Hunka is wanted for crimes against Polish people of Jewish origin, adding that “signs of such crimes are grounds to apply to Canada for his extradition.” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told media the situation was “extremely upsetting” and “deeply embarrassing” for Canada. Rota has since apologized and said he took “full responsibility” for the incident, but has so far refused to step down from his role. “What happened on Friday is completely unacceptable,” Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly added Tuesday. “It was an embarrassment to the House and to Canadians, and I think the Speaker should listen to members of the House and step down.” Canada’s Attorney General Arif Virani said he has not been contacted by the Polish government over the extradition request yet and that “commenting on early stages of an extradition process is not appropriate.” “What I would say to you is that an extradition process is a sensitive matter that ultimately comes across my desk for a final decision,” Virani added. “Apropos of that, I can’t be commenting on an extradition matter until it actually appears in front of my desk because that would jeopardize the investigation.”

Chess player denies using vibrating anal beads to beat opponent
    https://theprovince.com/news/weird/chess-player-denies-using-vibrating-anal-beads-to-beat-opponent/wcm/beb0970f-5d22-4e7d-a276-038866337fef
An American chess player has "categorically" denied using vibrating anal beads to beat the world's top player during a tournament last year. American Grandmaster Hans Niemann appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored over the weekend and was asked by the host if the accusation was true. “Categorically, no, of course not,” Niemann said, seated alongside his lawyer. In September 2022, top ranked chess player Magnus Carlsen, of Norway, accused Niemann of receiving strategy tips through vibrating beads at the $500,000 Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis.

No Discipline Recommended for Cops in Killing of Kawaski Trawick
    https://www.thecity.nyc/bronx/2023/9/25/23889800/no-discipline-recommended-cops-killing-kawaski-trawick
The NYPD’s head of administrative trials is recommending no punishment for two police officers involved in the shooting death of 32-year-old Kawaski Trawick in his Bronx apartment in April 2019, according to a draft ruling obtained by THE CITY. Trawick, a dancer and personal trainer, was Tased and shot four times by Police Officer Brendan Thompson within two minutes of Thompson and his partner Herbert Davis arriving at Trawick’s door. At the time, Trawick was living in a supportive housing building that provides services for substance abuse or mental health challenges. In her draft decision dated Sept. 20, Deputy Commissioner Rosemarie Maldonado faulted the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) for not filing misconduct charges against the two officers until after a statute of limitations for doing so had expired. The time limit on filing the charges against the cops was two years but the board missed it by nearly five months — mostly because of NYPD delays in turning over key evidence, a timeline contained in the draft decision shows.

SF Mayor Breed wants mandatory drug screening, treatment for welfare recipients
    https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/article/breed-drug-screening-treatment-welfare-18388195.php
San Francisco would require low-income residents to undergo substance abuse screening and treatment as a requirement to be eligible to receive welfare funds under a new proposal from Mayor London Breed. Breed said the move was an effort to bring accountability to the city’s drug and homelessness crisis. “We need to make a significant change,” Breed said. “No more ‘anything goes’ without accountability, no more handouts without accountability.” Breed announced the policy Tuesday morning at a news conference at City Hall, the same day local philanthropist Daniel Lurie announced his candidacy for mayor.

It is perhaps Mexico’s most notorious cold case — 43 college students shot at by the police, forced into patrol cars, handed over to a drug cartel and never seen again. The mystery has haunted the nation for nearly a decade. How could a relatively unknown gang pull off one of the worst atrocities in Mexico’s recent history, with the help of the police and the military watching the mass abduction unfold in real time?

FTC and 17 states sue Amazon on antitrust charges
    https://www.cnbc.com/2023/09/26/ftc-and-17-states-sue-amazon-on-antitrust-charges.html
The agency laid out a two-pronged strategy by which Amazon “unlawfully maintains” its monopoly power. It pointed to so-called anti-discounting measures the company uses to punish sellers and deter other online retailers from offering lower, more competitive prices than Amazon, which translates to keeping prices higher for products across the internet, the FTC said. Amazon also “effectively requires” that sellers use its “costly” fulfillment services in order to obtain the vaunted Prime badge for their products, the FTC said, which in turn makes it more expensive to do business on the platform. Sellers are paying $1 of every $2 to Amazon, FTC Chair Lina Khan told reporters at a briefing Tuesday.
