77-year-old man from The Villages arrested after found with $1,800 worth of illegal erectile dysfunction pills
    https://nbc-2.com/news/weird/2023/10/05/77-year-old-man-from-the-villages-arrested-after-found-with-1800-worth-of-illegal-erectile-dysfunction-pills/
Now, there’s outrage in the community that he was arrested. The Villages, with homes sprawling through multiple Florida counties, is considered one of the largest retirement communities in the nation. It is a place where senior romances bloom like spring flowers. And a place where one particular prescription pill could be in high demand. The kind that treats erectile dysfunction.

Cats Are Perfect. An Evolutionary Biologist Explains Why
    https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/cats-are-perfect-an-evolutionary-biologist-explains-why/
Anjali Goswami thinks cats are perfect—not in the same way that the average cat person might admire their beauty, athleticism and independence of spirit but from a scientific standpoint. Goswami is an evolutionary biologist at the Natural History Museum in London who studies large-scale patterns of evolution in vertebrate animals through time. She contends that cats—from tabbies to tigers—are quintessential products of evolution. I sat down with her to find out why. Her explanation reveals cats, and the meaning of evolutionary success, in a fascinating new light.

    https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/politics/these-new-poll-numbers-show-why-biden-and-trump-are-stuck-in-a-2024-dead-heat
Biden has a slight lead over Trump, his predecessor and current frontrunner for the Republican nomination, with 49 percent of registered voters saying they’d choose the incumbent and 47 percent siding with Trump, according to the latest poll. Independents favor Trump by an 8-point margin. The race remains virtually unchanged from August and is inside the poll’s margin of error.

National Democrats ask Ohio Supreme Court to block new legislative redistricting maps
    https://www.cleveland.com/news/2023/10/aclu-voting-rights-groups-ask-ohio-supreme-court-to-block-new-legislative-redistricting-maps.html
Several plaintiffs affiliated with a national Democratic redistricting group on Thursday asked the Ohio Supreme Court to find the state’s newly passed legislative redistricting plan to be unconstitutionally gerrymandered. It’s the first legal challenge filed against the new state legislative maps passed unanimously by the Ohio Redistricting Commission last week. The new redistricting plan, passed Sept. 27, gives Republicans an advantage in 61 of 99 Ohio House districts and 23 of 33 state Senate districts, according to State Auditor Keith Faber, the commission’s Republican co-chair. The two Democrats on the seven-member commission voted for the plan, saying (among other things) that it was preferable to Republicans passing a map even more favorable to them.

Woman receives life sentence after Douglas County deputies exposed to fentanyl during drug bust in Lake Tahoe
    https://mynews4.com/news/local/woman-receives-life-sentence-after-douglas-county-deputies-exposed-to-fentanyl-during-drug-bust-in-lake-tahoe#
A woman has been sentenced to life in prison after multiple deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office were exposed to fentanyl during a drug bust near South Lake Tahoe in October 2022... "As we opened that container, it pressurized just like on a plane and pushed some of the substance out," he said. Video of the initial exposure was not available because it was during an undercover drug bust and undercover deputies are not required to wear body cameras under Nevada law. Coverley said he believes other deputies were exposed when in direct contact while searching the suspects, who he said had drugs on them from using earlier that day. Five of his deputies were rushed to the hospital where they were treated for pretend bullshit.

Military judge rules 9/11 defendant unfit for trial after medical panel finds torture left him psychotic
    https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/military-judge-rules-9-11-defendant-unfit-for-trial-after-medical-panel-finds-torture-left-him-psychotic
A military judge at Guantanamo Bay has ruled one of the 9/11 defendants too mentally ill to stand trial, after a military medical panel found that the man's torture in CIA custody years earlier has rendered him psychotic. Al-Shibh has complained for years since his transfer to the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, that his guards were attacking him, including by invisible rays, so as to deprive him of sleep and cause him pain. Defense attorney David Bruck argued at a hearing by the military court Tuesday for McCall to accept the medical panel’s finding that al-Shibh’s mental issues were too severe for him to meaningfully take part in his defense. Bruck pointed to what he said was al-Shibh’s solitary confinement over four years in detention at CIA black sites, and torture that included his being forced to stand sleepless for as long as three days at a time, naked except for a diaper and doused with cold water in air-conditioned rooms, for the man’s lasting belief that his American guards were still conspiring to deprive him of sleep. Bruck indicated that al-Shibh would be expected to remain in custody if found incompetent to stand trial.

Microsoft Bing AI Generates Images Of Kirby Doing 9/11
    https://kotaku.com/microsoft-bing-ai-image-art-kirby-mario-9-11-nintendo-1850899895
Microsoft’s Bing Image Creator creator has been around since March, using “AI” technology to generate images based on whatever the user types. You never know where this sort of thing might lead, though, and in recent weeks users have been using the tool to create images of Kirby and other popular characters flying planes into skyscrapers. Microsoft doesn’t want you digitally recreating the September 11 attacks, but because AI tools are impossible to control, it seems unlikely it can stop users who really want to see SpongeBob committing acts of simulated terrorism.

Former Ubisoft executives arrested after sexual harassment investigation
    https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/4/23901575/ubisoft-executives-arrest-sexual-harassment-investigation
French newspaper Libération has reported that five ex-Ubisoft employees have been arrested in connection with a sexual harassment investigation by French police. According to the paper, in 2021, French police received complaints from the Solidaires Informatique union — a French union that serves digital, consulting, and video game workers — and two individuals. After more than a year of investigation involving extensive interviews with around 50 current and former Ubisoft employees, the arrests were carried out over October 3rd and 4th. Of the five individuals arrested, only two are named — former chief creative officer Serge Hacosët and editorial vice president Tommy François, both of whom left the company in 2020.
