8-game suspension given to Edmonton hockey player whose skate sliced opponent's neck
    https://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/8-game-suspension-given-to-edmonton-hockey-player-whose-skate-sliced-opponent-s-neck-1.6598839
An Edmonton junior hockey player has been banned from his league for about six weeks for a "kicking motion" that sliced open an opponent's neck. On Sept. 27, Richie Compo of the Junior Braves was rushed to hospital in an ambulance when he was cut during a game at the Castle Downs Recreation Centre in north Edmonton. Nate Plaunt of the South West Zone Oil Kings was given a match penalty with 57 seconds left. In his incident report, the game's referee said he penalized Plaunt for "deliberately kicking" an opponent in his "neck/face area." The penalty came with an automatic three-game suspension.

Dashcam Footage Shows Cops Ignoring Robbery To Play Pokémon Go
    https://kotaku.com/pokemon-go-police-cops-lapd-dashcam-video-footage-fired-1850916322
Newly released dashboard camera footage shows two Los Angeles Police Department officers ignoring an active robbery in order to catch some rare creatures in Pokémon Go. The footage shows how the driver ignored stop signs, sped through quiet residential areas, and drove the wrong way down a one-way road. All this was done to catch a Snorlax and Togetic. In 2022, we reported on then-newly-released court docs that revealed a 2017 incident involving two LAPD officers who drove dangerously and ignored direct orders while playing the hit mobile game, Pokémon Go. Louis Lozano and Eric Mitchell skipped out on their job to catch some rare digital critters and then lied about their actions. The two law enforcement officers had a combined 28 years on the force. After a 2017 investigation revealed what they had done, the two officers were fired. Last year, we didn’t have footage of what happened. Now, six years later, video has finally emerged.

Corporations are paying for worker abuse audits that are ‘designed to fail’, say insiders
    https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2023/oct/10/corporate-auditing-foreign-workers-abuse-claims
Before he began the interviews, Ahmed swept the room for cameras and recording devices. He then invited the workers in, one by one, spending about 10 minutes talking with each. They were employed at a factory in the Middle East that supplied goods for a major American company – and it was Ahmed’s job, as an outside auditor, to uncover any labor abuses. Often, before he could even ask a question, the staff members hastened to assure him that they were happy with their jobs. Their eagerness made him suspicious. As Ahmed coaxed answers out of one worker, a security guard at the factory, a different picture emerged. He said he had worked 26 days straight, with long hours, no days off and no overtime pay. He was scared – if anyone found out he was talking honestly, he might lose his job. When Ahmed scrutinized the attendance and pay records the company provided him, he found they had been falsified, in part because security footage showed the man was truly enduring a grueling schedule. The names of all the workers were missing from attendance records, making it impossible to decipher whether hours and wages were fair.

A Detective Sabotaged His Own Cases Because He Didn’t Like the Prosecutor. The Police Department Did Nothing to Stop Him.
    https://www.propublica.org/article/homicide-detective-st-louis-refused-testify-roger-murphey-kim-gardner
A number of American cities have elected prosecutors who promised progressive law enforcement, focusing as much on police accountability as being tough on crime. In St. Louis, that prosecutor was Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner, who was elected in 2016 following the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown in the suburb of Ferguson. Gardner came into office pledging to reduce mass incarceration and promote rehabilitation over punishment. But from San Francisco to Philadelphia, prosecutors like Gardner have faced pushback from the police and, in several cities, from their own courtroom assistants. Politicians and voters have tried to remove some of these prosecutors from office — and, in a number of cities, they have been successful. Murphey’s resistance to Gardner — Chigurupati’s boss when Vincent’s case went to trial — was unusual and, perhaps, extreme. By his own account, he was willing to help murder suspects walk free to make a point, even if he arrested them and believed that they should be behind bars.

Comet Impact Sparked a Massive Change on Earth 13,000 Years Ago
    https://www.sciencealert.com/comet-impact-sparked-a-massive-change-on-earth-13000-years-ago
Imagine being a hunter-gatherer nearly 13 thousand years ago. You're minding your own business – gathering berries and hunting wild animals – when suddenly a giant ball of fire appears in the sky. It explodes with a deafening roar, sending shockwaves towards the ground and flattening trees and homes. New research suggests this is how the first seeds of agriculture were planted in Syria, a necessary adaptation to improve the community's chances of survival. After a comet's fragments slammed into Earth's atmosphere, the climate changed dramatically, with the plants and animals they relied on disappearing. A global team presented their case after analyzing sediment layers from Neolithic site Abu Hureyra, which was excavated in the 1970s before being submerged under Lake Assad by the construction of the Euphrates dam. Abu Hureyra is well-known as the site with the earliest evidence of a shift from hunter-gathering to farming.

Not Built by Homo sapiens – Scientists Discover “Extraordinary” 476,000-Year-Old Wooden Structure
    https://scitechdaily.com/not-built-by-homo-sapiens-scientists-discover-extraordinary-476000-year-old-wooden-structure/
Discoveries at Kalambo Falls, Zambia offer insights into ancient human technology. Recent research has revealed that nearly half a million years ago, ancient human ancestors, predating Homo sapiens, were already engaging in advanced woodworking. The artifacts found indicate that these humans were building structures, potentially laying the foundation of platforms or parts of dwellings, much earlier than what was once believed.
