What good is a union in Hell?
    https://therealnews.com/uaw-what-good-is-a-union-in-hell
“Brothers, sisters, siblings, we stand here now on the precipice of oblivion… This isn't just about fighting for better wages and working conditions… This is about who is willing to fight for life itself?” On Sunday, July 20, 2025, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez delivered the keynote speech at the national convention of the National Organization of Legal Services Workers (NOLSW), UAW Local 2320. “I am here to report back to you from the front lines of struggle, without hesitation or hyperbole, that we are at risk of losing everything,” Alvarez told the crowd of union members. “And so I am here not to extol the virtues of your union or the value of unions in general, but to ask you bluntly: What good is a union in Hell? How much can an organization of the dawned do in a future no one wants to live in? What good does a collective bargaining agreement serve when the world as we know it is dying?”

Innovation Strikes In The Field Of Chimpanzee Rectum Adornment | Defector
    https://defector.com/innovation-strikes-in-the-field-of-chimpanzee-rectum-adornment?giftLink=6b9f4316b7b81c4950eed0fc0a3d6998
Fifteen years ago in a sanctuary in Zambia, inspiration struck a chimpanzee named Julie. She plucked a stiff blade of grass, stuck it inside her ear, and left it there. There the grass dangled as Julie played, groomed, and rested. The behavior soon spread to most of the other chimpanzees in Julie's group, called Group 4, and was adopted by her son Jack and chimps Kathy, Miracle, and Val. In the span of just one year, Julie was observed with grass in her ear 168 times; by comparison, the next most frequent observer was Kathy, with 36 grass-in-ear sightings. After Julie died in 2013, her invention lived on, with Kathy and Val carrying the torch. The ear grass served no clear purpose, except, perhaps, fashion. But its quick spread and persistence even after Julie's death suggests grass-in-ear had become a cultural tradition for this particular group at the Chimfunshi sanctuary for rescued chimps. Now, a different group of chimps at Chimfunshi have debuted a totally new grass-based innovation, all thanks to a chimp named Juma, who has invented grass-in-rear. This behavior is pretty much what it sounds like: Juma inserts a stiff blade of grass into his rectum and lets it hang. When the researchers first noticed grass-in-rear, "we were quite confused," said Jake Brooker, a primatologist at Durham University. Grass-in-rear, much like grass-in-ear, has no clear purpose. As such, a group of researchers including Brooker argue in a paper in Behaviour that Juma's invention is an example of a new social chimpanzee cultural tradition.

Criminal Charges Filed Against Man Who Cut Down Neighbor's Trees To Create Ocean Views
    https://nantucketcurrent.com/crime/charges-filed-against-cisco-tree-cutter-in-nantucket-district-court
The island resident who allegedly cut down 16 trees that were decades old in a neighbor’s yard to create an ocean view at his residence out in the Cisco area had probable cause found on three charges by Nantucket District Court clerk magistrate Brian Kearney and will now appear for an arraignment session on September 15th. Jonathan Jacoby, 56, will be arraigned on charges of vandalizing property (felony), cutting/destroying trees (misdemeanor), and trespassing (misdemeanor). Nantucket District Court Judge James Sullivan waived Jacoby's appearance at the arraignment session. Jacoby made national headlines after a lawsuit was filed by his neighbor, Patricia Belford, in June, accusing him of trespassing into their yard at 1 Tautemo Way earlier this year and cutting down a stand of 50-year-old trees in order to create an ocean view for himself from the abutting property at 3 Tautemo Way. Jacoby then subsequently listed his property for sale for nearly $10 million while touting its “sweeping ocean views” in the property description. In an email to the Boston Globe, Jacoby stated, “I wasn't trespassing, I was clearing out her crappy trees.”

Hulk Hogan's Sex Tape Lawsuit Changed Kotaku Forever
    https://kotaku.com/hulk-hogan-sex-tape-gawker-lawsuit-kotaku-go-media-1851787000
The world doesn’t need another retread of the lawsuit itself. Plenty of those have already been written, including by the people who lived it. The facts are simple enough. There was a tape of Hogan, real name Terry Gene Bollea, having sex. Gawker posted a brief portion of it online. Bollea, with $10 million in backing from Thiel, a Silicon Valley nut with a grudge, sued in a friendly Florida court where a jury eventually awarded the wrestler $140 million in damages, more than DuPont is currently paying for polluting an entire town’s water supply with forever chemicals. A $50 million appeal bond all but prevented the company from continuing to fight the lawsuit, even after evidence that may have helped it on appeal later leaked publicly. The entire affair ended up being a prescient window into the current cultural moment in two ways. For one, it emboldened rich people to exploit the legal system to settle scores with media members they didn’t like over unflattering or embarrassing coverage. What some critics considered just deserts for an irreverent website caught out over its skis now forms the basis for media companies and others speedrunning settlements with people like President Trump to avoid making life harder for themselves. Secondly, the trial forecasted just how stupid things were about to get. One clip from it circulating around this week following Bollea’s death shows him trying to explain to a jury why Hulk Hogan had a 10-inch penis but Bollea himself did not. There was the moment when the judge in the case allowed one of the jurors to ask the then-Editor-in-Chief of Jezebel whether she had slept with Gawker owner Nick Denton to get the job. It was unclear what bearing that would have had on the case. Also, Denton is gay. Every day in our political life is now this stupid, and with way more at stake for everyone involved.

Electroreception in treehoppers: How extreme morphologies can increase electrical sensitivity
    https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2505253122
Our study reveals that the extreme morphologies seen in animals such as treehoppers may increase their sensitivity to electrical stimuli. We show that treehoppers can likely detect the electric fields of their predators and that sufficient electrostatic information exists in the ecology of treehoppers that they may even distinguish these predators from friendly bees using electrical cues alone. This introduces a level of sophistication not previously ascribed to the electrostatic sense. Furthermore, by demonstrating that the extreme morphology of treehoppers increases the strength of electric field stimuli around these animals, we suggest that the enigmatic function of their spectacular pronota is partly as an electroreceptor and that natural selection for increased electrical sensitivity may have contributed to their diverse evolution.

Gabbard's claims of an anti-Trump conspiracy are not supported by declassified documents
    https://apnews.com/article/gabbard-russia-2016-steele-dossier-0452e1079506daa86d75fa0a2f22fc60
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard this month declassified material she claimed proved a “treasonous conspiracy” by the Obama administration in 2016 to politicize U.S. intelligence in service of casting doubt on the legitimacy of Donald Trump’s presidential election victory. As evidence, Gabbard cited newly declassified emails from Obama officials and a 5-year-old classified House report in hopes of undermining the intelligence community’s conclusion Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted to boost Trump and denigrate his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton.
