Prosecutors seek resentencing for Erik and Lyle Menendez in 1989 killings of their parents
    https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/prosecutors-are-set-to-reveal-whether-they-favor-19860890.php
Prosecutors recommended Thursday Erik and Lyle Menendez be resentenced for the 1989 killings of their parents in the family’s Beverly Hills home, providing the brothers with a chance at freedom after 34 years behind bars. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced during a Thursday news conference that his office would recommend the brothers receive a new sentence of 50 years to life. Because they were under 26 years old at the time of the crimes, they would be eligible for parole immediately, he said.

Kentucky state Sen. Johnnie Turner dies after plunging into empty swimming pool on lawn mower
    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/kentucky-lawmaker-johnnie-turner-dies-lawn-mower-pool/
Kentucky state Sen. Johnnie Turner, known for his staunch support for the coal industry and other causes in his Appalachian district, has died after being injured at home last month when he plunged into an empty swimming pool while aboard a lawn mower. He was 76. Turner, a Harlan Republican, was known for his folksy manner that endeared him to constituents and colleagues alike. Turner died Tuesday evening after his "hard-fought battle" with injuries sustained in the accident, Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers said in a statement Wednesday. But Turner looked well beyond his district to back measures benefiting the rest of the Bluegrass State, Thayer said, pointing to Turner's support for a high-stakes horse racing bill a few years ago. That measure secured the legal status of wagering on slots-style historical racing machines, a lucrative revenue source for racetracks. It was a tough vote for Turner, who represented a socially conservative district.

Former OpenAI Researcher Says the Company Broke Copyright Law
    https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/23/technology/openai-copyright-law.html
Suchir Balaji spent nearly four years as an artificial intelligence researcher at OpenAI. Among other projects, he helped gather and organize the enormous amounts of internet data the company used to build its online chatbot, ChatGPT. At the time, he did not carefully consider whether the company had a legal right to build its products in this way. He assumed the San Francisco start-up was free to use any internet data, whether it was copyrighted or not. But after the release of ChatGPT in late 2022, he thought harder about what the company was doing. He came to the conclusion that OpenAI’s use of copyrighted data violated the law and that technologies like ChatGPT were damaging the internet. In August, he left OpenAI because he no longer wanted to contribute to technologies that he believed would bring society more harm than benefit. “If you believe what I believe, you have to just leave the company,” he said during a recent series of interviews with The New York Times.
