The Larger Brains of Humans Come With a Tragic Cost, Study Finds
    https://www.sciencealert.com/the-larger-brains-of-humans-come-with-a-tragic-cost-study-finds
The prefrontal cortex is among the first regions to be impacted by such age-associated changes, curiously supporting a theory that suggests the last parts of our brain to mature as we develop happen to be the first to experience decline from aging. These locations of the brain also seem to be less dense with neurons than other areas, potentially contributing to the fragility of their cells, the researchers suspect.

With father of suspect charged in Georgia shooting, will more parents be held responsible?
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/father-suspect-charged-georgia-shooting-130334098.html
Murder charges filed against the father of a 14-year-old boy accused of a Georgia school shooting follow the successful prosecution of two parents in Michigan who were held responsible for a similar tragedy at a school north of Detroit. Is it a sign of a crackdown on parents accused of gross negligence when it comes to kids and guns? “It’s a matter of looking at the relationship between what the child says and does and what the parent knows about what the child says and does,” said David Shapiro, a former prosecutor who teaches at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.

    https://www.iflscience.com/we-now-know-exactly-where-in-the-world-humans-and-neanderthals-hooked-up-75850
The Zagros Mountains would have been an ideal place for the two species to rendezvous. The region has a diverse range of biodiversity and topography capable of supporting large stable human populations. Plus, it could have welcomed humans from other parts of the planet during the Pleistocene climatic shifts, acting as a corridor connecting the cooler Palearctic realm with the warmer Afrotropical realm.

Grenfell Tower fire inquiry blames deaths on incompetence and greed
    https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/grenfell-tower-report-detail-what-led-deadly-2017-london-blaze-2024-09-03/
It was Britain's deadliest blaze in a residential building since World War Two. "The simple truth is that the deaths that occurred were all avoidable," said inquiry chair Martin Moore-Bick. In its long-awaited final report, the inquiry laid most responsibility for the disaster on the companies involved in the maintenance and refit of the apartment tower, failings by local and national authorities as well as companies which had dishonestly marketed combustible cladding materials as safe. There was also widespread criticism and blame levelled at the then-government, the local authority of Kensington and Chelsea, the industry, regulatory groups, specific individuals and an ill-prepared fire brigade for years of inaction over fire safety in high-rise blocks. "Not all of them bear the same degree of responsibility for the eventual disaster, but as our reports show, all contributed to it in one way or another, in most cases, through incompetence, but in some cases, through dishonesty and greed," Moore-Bick said. The inquiry report, which ran to almost 1,700 pages, said the inferno was the culmination of "decades of failure", with profits put before people.
