The Alameda County district attorney’s office filed felony charges Monday against 60-year-old Berkeley resident Tony Walker in the June killing of 19-year-old Cal student Seth Smith.
Smith had been walking on Dwight Way in southwest Berkeley when someone approached him from behind and shot him at close range in the back of the head without warning or provocation, authorities have said.
On Monday, the DA’s office charged Walker with murder and several other felony firearms violations, according to court records reviewed by Berkeleyside. Walker, a felon on probation who lived within a few hundred feet of where the homicide happened, at Dwight Way and Valley Street, was prohibited from having guns or ammunition because of his criminal record.

Residents in Detroit are left with more questions than answers after a 20-year-old woman believed to have died was found breathing at a funeral home.
The Southfield Fire Department released a statement saying paramedics responded to a call for an unresponsive female Sunday morning.
When paramedics arrived on the scene, they found the woman to not be breathing.
According to the statement from the fire department, the paramedics performed CPR and other life saving methods for 30 minutes.
After their efforts, "given medical readings and the condition of the patient, it was determined at that time that she did not have signs of life."
Authorities say per standard operating procedure in a situation where foul play is not suspected, the medical examiner's office was contacted and given the medical data.
The medical examiner's office again determined the patient to have expired, and her body was released directly to the family to make arrangements with a funeral home.
WXYZ reports hours later, staff at the James H. Cole funeral home realized the woman was still breathing.

But their new profile ignores a significant chapter in their professional histories: The couple, who for decades ran a personal injury law practice in Missouri, litigated numerous cases against prominent gun manufacturers and contributed to the downfall of what was once America’s largest handgun maker. In fact, the handgun Patricia McCloskey brandished on June 28 appears to have been an exhibit used in one of those cases.

Baupost Group, the hedge fund run by Seth Klarman, received more than $3 billion in July from its bet on insurance claims against PG&E Corp. connected to a series of deadly California wildfires, according to people with knowledge of the matter.
The payout yielded Baupost’s biggest profit generator last month and represented a sizable markup from what the firm had anticipated, it told investors Thursday. The fund bought $6.8 billion of subrogation claims against PG&E, court documents show.

Laurence Fishburne recently confirmed that he won’t be coming back for The Matrix 4. This seems to suggest Morpheus, a character featured in the first three films, won’t return in the upcoming sequel. But there are also rumors swirling that a younger Morpheus will be in the film, played by a new actor. So why a younger, pre-trilogy Morpheus or possibly no Morpheus at all? I blame The Matrix Online, the audacious MMORPG which killed him.
Let’s go back in time to 2005, when The Matrix Online was still young. The Matrix Online—or as many fans called it, MxO—was an MMORPG based on the original trilogy of films developed first by Monolith Productions then later by Sony Online Entertainment. It was set after the events of the third film, The Matrix Revolutions, which made sense in 2005 because most people back then still remembered what happened in the third film. For those of you reading this now, all you need to know is the third Matrix film ended with Neo’s death, but also the end of the war between machines and humans. A truce was created and humans would be freely allowed to leave the Matrix.
However, there were still some problems between the various humans, programs, and machines. This was bad news for the truce, but conveniently created a post-Revolutions world that allowed for a big MMO featuring combat and different factions to exist.

Carlotta sits down to draw a self-portrait. The room is very dark, lit just by a few candles. She doesn't need light, because she's not using a mirror or a photograph - instead, with one hand she traces the contours of her face, while her other hand sketches the shapes on paper.
"It's always a surprise when I see my drawings in daylight," she says.
Her apartment is filled with self-portraits - about 1,000 of them, she thinks. Each one is completely different, and they have an otherworldly quality. Shapes overlap. Several heads may be projected on top of each other, sometimes upside down. In one, she has three eyes, in another six.
If she catches sight of herself in a mirror, Carlotta will think, "the woman looking at me is in my nightie and in my flat, so it must be me". She will also recognise her hair - it's what happens underneath those grey curls that's a mystery.

So every time we meet with the artist we say, “Tell me what do you wanna wear, what’s your outfit?” And we would take all these extensive notes and we’d take pictures if there were things that they might be wearing or they would send us stuff. Then I’d say, “What’s your special move, tell me what you want your special move to be,” and I’d explain how that works in the game.
And Ghostface was like, “Ok. Here’s the thing. I gotta have all my jewelry and I wanna have a giant gold eagle on my arm. And then at a special point in the match, I do my special move and my eagle comes to life and it flies up in the air and it claws the mother fucker’s eyes out.” I turned to Lauren and said “We can’t do that. The engine can’t do that. It’s not possible.” She’s like, “Shut up. Just say yes.” I’m like, “Of course. Ok. So the eagle flies and it claws his eyes out.” He’s like, “Yeah.” And he’s describing all this shit and I’m like, “Cool.”
And I’m thinking, “I’m never gonna have to see Ghost again. I’m good.” And then we did the sequel and as soon as I met him he was like, “What the fuck happened to my eagle, man?” He was super, super pissed. And I was like, “I am so sorry. We couldn’t make that happen.”

Population aging is a powerful force. By 2030 the population above age 60 will have grown so much that other generations like millennials and Gen-Z will be outnumbered by them in Europe, China, Japan and the United States. Each day, 12,000 Americans celebrate their 60th birthday; in China, 54,000; and in the world, about 210,000, according to the United Nations Population Division. The pandemic will only accelerate this trend given the predictable decline in fertility — which tends to occur whenever unemployment is high — and the shifting demographics of cases and deaths, which are trending younger as time goes by.
The 60+ crowd will become very important economically for three reasons. First, they own more than half of the net worth around the world, a proportion that reaches 80 percent in the United States, according to a study by the Federal Reserve. Second, the same study concluded that the net worth of seniors is more evenly distributed than among younger age groups, and poverty rates are also lower. And third, their incomes tend to be more resilient because many of them depend on pensions or investment income, and they can do some work on the side to cover potential shortfalls.
