Trump's 'plane loaded with thugs' conspiracy theory matches months-old rumor
    https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/trump-s-plane-loaded-thugs-rumor-matches-months-old-facebook-n1238962
The conspiracy theory that President Donald Trump pushed Monday that a plane “almost completely loaded with thugs” had been set to disrupt the Republican National Convention was almost identical to a rumor that went viral on Facebook three months ago. In an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Trump claimed that “we had somebody get on a plane from a certain city this weekend, and in the plane it was almost completely loaded with thugs, wearing these dark uniforms, black uniforms, with gear and this and that.” He then claimed the matter was “under investigation right now.” There is no evidence of any such flight. When Ingraham asked for more information about the flight, the president said, "I'll tell you sometime." He then alleged the people had been headed to Washington to disrupt the RNC.

Pilot reports 'guy in a jetpack' during approach to Los Angeles airport
    https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/514550-pilot-reports-guy-in-a-jetpack-during-approach-to-los-angeles-airport
At least two separate flight crews landing at Los Angeles International Airport Sunday night reported seeing what appeared to be a “guy in a jetpack” flying near them. According to tower tapes obtained by Fox 11 and other news outlets, the first pilot was landing an American Airlines plane when he saw the person flying about 300 yards in the air.  “We just passed a guy in a jetpack," the pilot said.  A second pilot reportedly flying a JetBlue plane confirmed they also saw a “guy passing by them in a jet pack.”

The Bizarre, Peaty Science of Arctic Wildfires
    https://www.wired.com/story/the-bizarre-peaty-science-of-arctic-wildfires/
The Arctic is burning. Yes, that Arctic—the traditionally cold and wet one, large swaths of which are being consumed by an astonishing number of wildfires, from Russia to Greenland to Alaska. “Arctic fires—the combination of these two words is still an unusual term in my field of fire science,” says Guillermo Rein of Imperial College London. “Arctic fires are rare, but they're not unprecedented. What is unprecedented is the number of fires that are happening. Never before have satellites around the planet seen this level of activity.” Unprecedented, yes, but not unexplained. The Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet, leading to the desiccation of vegetation, which fuels huge blazes. Fortunately for us, these wildfires typically threaten remote, sparsely populated areas. But unfortunately for the whole of humanity, so far this year Arctic fires have released some 121 megatonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, more than what Belgium emits annually. That beats the previous Arctic record of 110 megatonnes of CO2, set in 2004—and we’re only in June.

Arctic wildfires emit 35% more CO2 so far in 2020 than for whole of 2019
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/aug/31/arctic-wildfires-emit-35-more-co2-so-far-in-2020-than-for-whole-of-2019
The amount of carbon dioxide emitted by Arctic wildfires this year is already 35% higher than the figure for the whole of 2019. The latest data, provided by the EU’s Copernicus atmosphere monitoring service, shows that up to 24 August 245 megatonnes of CO2 had been released from wildfires this year. The figure for the whole of last year was 181 megatonnes. The peak number of active fire observations was about 600 in late July, compared with 400 in 2019. The average equivalent number between 2003 and 2018 was about 100. Copernicus estimated that 205 megatonnes of CO2 was emitted between 1 June and 31 July alone. The wildfires coincided with a heatwave in Siberia, where temperatures soared to more than 30C (86F) in some areas.

Drug suspect offered July plea deal if he would admit Breonna Taylor part of 'organized crime syndicate'
    https://www.wdrb.com/in-depth/drug-suspect-offered-july-plea-deal-if-he-would-admit-breonna-taylor-part-of-organized/article_df18d6e0-ebaf-11ea-b636-9ff3afe1f8ed.html
Jamarcus Glover, the focus of a series of Louisville police raids, including one in which officers shot and killed Breonna Taylor, was offered a plea bargain last month if he would admit that Taylor was a member of his “organized crime syndicate,” records show. As part of the July 13 offer, Glover was to acknowledge that over a period of time through April 22 he and several “co-defendants,” including Taylor, engaged in organized crime by trafficking large amounts of drugs “into the Louisville community.” Glover, a convicted felon with a history of drug trafficking, turned down the plea offer from the Jefferson Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office. It would have resulted in a possible 10-year prison sentence for charges of criminal syndication, drug trafficking and gun charges.

Whistleblower Testifies Deputy Who Shot Gardena Teen Was “Chasing Ink”
    https://spectrumnews1.com/ca/la-west/public-safety/2020/08/30/whistleblower-testifies-deputy-who-shot-gardena-teen-was--chasing-ink--
The deputy shot and killed 18-year-old Andres Guardado. More than a dozen deputies have matching tattoos and belong to a violent clique called the Executioners at the station, according to Deputy Art Gonzalez, who filed a whistleblower complaint regarding the Executioners in June. “I now call them a gang because that’s what gangs do – they beat up other people,” Gonzalez said. His sworn testimony obtained by Spectrum News 1 is for a separate excessive force case filed against Los Angeles County. The deputies in the lawsuit are accused of “chasing ink” – slang for trying to impress the Executioners to join their group. “There are parties after shootings. They call them ‘998 parties.’ Some people say it’s to celebrate the deputy is alive. Others say it’s to celebrate that they’re going to be ‘inking’ somebody.”

Facebook Could Block Sharing of News Stories in Australia
    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/31/technology/facebook-block-news-stories-australia.html
With each passing day, the World Wide Web is becoming an outdated name. Facebook warned on Monday that it would block users and news organizations in Australia from sharing local and international news stories on its social network and Instagram if the country passed a proposed code of conduct aimed at curbing the power of Facebook and Google. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the country’s top competition authority, is drafting a bill for Parliament that would require both companies to negotiate with media publishers and pay them for content that appears on their sites.

Joe Biden: 'Do I look like a radical socialist with a soft spot for rioters? Really?'
    https://theweek.com/speedreads/934978/joe-biden-look-like-radical-socialist-soft-spot-rioters-really
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden in a campaign speech on Monday pushed back against claims that he has a 'soft spot' for rioters while accusing President Trump of having 'fomented' violence in office. Biden spoke from Pennsylvania on Monday for a speech focused on the question of whether 'you really feel safer under' Trump, and in the address, he condemned looting and rioting amid unrest in Portland, Oregon, and Kenosha, Wisconsin. 'Rioting is not protesting,' Biden said. 'Looting is not protesting. Setting fires is not protesting. None of this is protesting. It's lawlessness, plain and simple. And those who do it should be prosecuted. Violence will not bring change, it will only bring destruction.' The Democratic presidential nominee accused Trump of 'stroking violence in our cities' and being unable to 'stop the violence because for years he's fomented it,' saying, 'You know me. You know my heart. You know my...

Judge blocks defense 3M planned to use in earplug lawsuit
    https://kstp.com/minnesota-news/judge-blocks-defense-3m-planned-to-use-in-earplug-lawsuit-july-27-2020/5808683/
Friday, a federal judge blocked a legal defense 3M planned in a lawsuit over its earplugs.  Veterans across the country, including dozens from Minnesota, accused the Maplewood-based company of selling the military "dangerously defective" earplugs that failed to protect Marines and soldiers from long-term hearing-related disabilities. Minnesota veterans blame 3M's 'defective' earplugs for hearing damage The company invoked the government contract defense, which shields companies from liability for defects in products designed and developed for the federal government.  However, the judge's ruling says the design for the earplugs were created without input from the Army.

‘Here We Go Again’: A Second Virus Wave Grips Spain
    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/31/world/europe/coronavirus-covid-spain-second-wave.html
At midday on Sunday, there were 31 patients inside the main coronavirus treatment center in Málaga, the city with the fastest-rising infection rate in southern Spain. At 12.15 p.m., the 32nd arrived in an ambulance. Half an hour later came number 33. The garbage can by the door overflowed with masks and blue surgical gloves. Relatives hovered in silence outside — one of them in tears, another feeling a pang of déjà-vu. “My brother-in-law had the virus in the spring,” said Julia Bautista, a 58-year-old retired office administrator waiting for news on Sunday of her 91-year-old father. “Here we go again,” she added. If Italy was the harbinger of the first wave of Europe’s coronavirus pandemic in February, Spain is the portent of its second.
