It just keeps getting worse! Now, when you watch , not only are you turning a blind eye to police brutality and racial injustice (due to what the lead actors stand for), you're also potentially complicit in the mass incarceration of Muslim Uyghurs.

    TikTok & WeChat
    https://www.aspi.org.au/report/tiktok-wechat
Newcomer TikTok, through its unparalleled growth in both Asian and Western markets, has a vastly larger and broader global audience of nearly 700 million as of July 2020.4 This report finds that TikTok engages in censorship on a range of political and social topics, while also demoting and suppressing content. Case studies in this report show how discussions related to LGBTQ+ issues, Xinjiang and protests currently occurring in the US, for example, are being affected by censorship and the curation and control of information. Leaked content moderation documents have previously revealed that TikTok has instructed "its moderators to censor videos that mention Tiananmen Square, Tibetan independence, or the banned religious group Falun Gong,” among other censorship rules.

Can the American University Be Saved?
    https://www.thenation.com/article/society/gig-academy-meritocracy-trap-universities-crisis/tnamp/?__twitter_impression=true
The Covid-19 pandemic has revealed the glaring contradictions in American higher education. State research universities are preparing to decrease services in light of anticipated budget shortfalls as small liberal arts colleges teeter on the brink of financial ruin. Meanwhile, Ivy League and other rich universities have refused to dip into their massive endowments and have instead chosen to pursue austerity while increasing tuition—and increasing debt—for their students.

Call police for a woman who is changing clothes in an alley? A new program in Denver sends mental health professionals instead.
    https://www.denverpost.com/2020/09/06/denver-star-program-mental-health-police/amp/?__twitter_impression=true
A concerned passerby dialed 911 to report a sobbing woman sitting alone on a curb in downtown Denver. Instead of a police officer, dispatchers sent Carleigh Sailon, a seasoned mental health professional with a penchant for wearing Phish T-shirts, to see what was going on. The woman, who was unhoused, was overwhelmed and scared. She’d ended up in an unfamiliar part of town. It was blazing hot and she didn’t know where to go. Sailon gave the woman a snack and some water and asked how she could help. Could she drive her somewhere? The woman was pleasantly surprised.

ICE Guards “Systematically” Sexually Assault Detainees in an El Paso Detention Center, Lawyers Say
    https://www.propublica.org/article/ice-guards-systematically-sexually-assault-detainees-in-an-el-paso-detention-center-lawyers-say/amp?__twitter_impression=true
Guards in an immigrant detention center in El Paso sexually assaulted and harassed inmates in a “pattern and practice” of abuse, according to a complaint filed by a Texas advocacy group urging the local district attorney and federal prosecutors to conduct a criminal investigation. The allegations, detailed in a filing first obtained by ProPublica and The Texas Tribune, maintain that guards systematically assaulted at least three people in a facility overseen by Immigration and Customs Enforcement — often in areas of the detention center not visible to security cameras. The guards told victims that no one would believe them because footage did not exist and the harassment involved officers as high-ranking as a lieutenant.

Justice Department wants to defend Trump in Carroll defamation lawsuit
    https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/08/politics/e-jean-carroll-trump-lawsuit/index.html
The US Justice Department, in an extraordinary move on Tuesday, asked to take over the defense of President Donald Trump in a defamation lawsuit filed against him by E. Jean Carroll, a woman who has accused Trump of sexual assault. While the alleged sexual assault occurred long before Trump became President, the Justice Department argued that it must take over because Trump's comments spurring the defamation lawsuit came while he was in office. The move -- defending Trump at taxpayer expense -- comes amid ongoing criticism that the Justice Department has acted in the President's personal interests.

Inside Project Veritas's Cynical, Transphobic Outing of a 65-Year-Old Fast Food Worker
    https://jezebel.com/inside-project-veritass-cynical-transphobic-outing-of-1844978487
Vincent Marzello didn’t expect to be chatting with a stranger. The 65-year-old from West Lebanon, New Hampshire, sat at a computer in his local library, where he could get 30 minutes of internet, his only real online access. As Marzello remembers it, a youngish, blonde man struck up a conversation: he was from California, had just moved to the area. Then the man suddenly pivoted, musing aloud that he might have voted twice. An odd thing to mention to someone you’d just met; a confession to a crime, really. Marzello got the man’s phone number but never saw him again.

One village’s response to misinformation? Burn the internet towers and take hostages.
    https://restofworld.org/2020/high-speed-conspiracy/
What began as a routine maintenance job soon turned into a complex hostage situation. On June 9, four subcontractors working for Israeli telecoms firm Gilat were dispatched to fix an internet mast amid a remote cluster of indigenous settlements in the central Peruvian Andes, a little over 13,000 feet above sea level. The team failed to return the next day, and the comunidad campesina Chopcca went dark. The following morning, another two engineers were sent to investigate. One managed to relay back a pair of cellphone videos — of the fire-blackened antenna, its burned-out apparatus, and an angry crowd — before they also went offline. The engineers’ manager went to plead for their release. He was also seized, along with his driver. Officers from a nearby police station, around an hour’s drive away, attempted to intervene but were forced back under a hail of stones. With Chopcca authorities proving implacable over the phone and flights grounded due to the coronavirus lockdown, government officials, conflict negotiation specialists, and Gilat staff began a 24-hour journey from the capital, Lima, up along 265 miles of winding roads to Huancavelica Region. Standoffs over infrastructure and mining projects are nothing new in this part of South America. Patrols often form in times of conflict or crisis to protect the community, and in February 2019, a crowd of Chopcca protesters seized the local police precinct, setting fire to patrol cars and beating up three men accused of robbery. But this was the first time that Gilat’s employees had been taken hostage “for more than a couple of hours,” Arieh Rohrstock, Gilat’s general manager for Peru, told Rest of World. “The village was very reluctant to let our people leave the site.”

They look white but say they're black: a tiny town in Ohio wrestles with race
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/jul/25/race-east-jackson-ohio-appalachia-white-black
The stale, smoky air around Clarice Shreck heaves. She takes a long hit of oxygen from the tube under her nose. She leans forward, shifting in her armchair, before releasing her raspy smoker’s laugh, which is smudged out a second later by her smoker’s cough. The pale woman with frizzy grey-streaked hair commands her on-and-off partner of over 20 years, Jimmy – who is from one of the few white families in East Jackson – to fetch her purse. He plops it on to her lap; she struggles to get at an old piece of paper folded up in her wallet. She slowly unfolds it to present her birth certificate. “Negro”, it reads, next to each of her parents’ names. She looks up triumphantly, victory in her periwinkle eyes. “It’s a legal document,” she says.

Why the Bay Area sky has a yellow glow but it doesn't smell like smoke
    https://www.sfgate.com/news/editorspicks/article/Bay-Area-yellow-glow-sky-wildfire-smoke-15550298.php
The sky over the Bay Area had a strange yellow glow Tuesday morning. There's clearly wildfire smoke in the air — as there has been for three weeks — but the sooty conditions seemed different than in past days. In San Francisco and the North Bay, you couldn't even smell the smoke and air quality levels ranged from good to moderate throughout the entire region, except for in the far East Bay around Livermore where conditions were "hazardous." What's going on? National Weather Service forecaster Roger Gass explained wildfire smoke from the August Complex fires in Mendocino County has traveled more than 100 miles to the Bay Area. The mass of polluted air is hovering high in the atmosphere above the marine layer that pushed inland from the Pacific Ocean this morning. "That's the reason it doesn’t smell smokey but the sky is a different color," explained Gass. "This fire is farther away so the smoke is getting lofted into the atmosphere and lofted over us."

Soap Opera Actors Are Being Forced To Kiss Mannequins And It’s Extremely Funny
    https://junkee.com/mannequins-soap-actor-kiss/269447
The television industry ground to a halt this year due to COVID-19 and the associated restrictions. Some shows have been slowly getting back into it, with writers rooms held via zoom or other safe channels. If filming, strict safety measures are in place, including restrictions on the amount of people on set, distancing, and aggressive testing. Clever writing will also feature, as shows figure out ways to write scenes that match up with the necessary precautions, and leaning heavily on innuendo. Some shows, like ‘The L Word: Generation Q’ have even hired real-life partners of cast members. But the no-contact is especially hard for TV shows that rely on intimacy between characters, and shows that often feature a lot of smooching and other horny horny behaviour. This is especially difficult for soap operas like ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ who rely heavily on interpersonal relationships between partners, and long-lost cousins with amnesia who are secretly princes or whatever. Their trick has been to bring in….mannequins.

A Black seventh-grader played with a toy gun during a virtual class. His school called the police.
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/09/08/black-student-suspended-police-toy-gun/
Dani Elliott was at work last month in Colorado Springs when her 12-year-old son’s vice principal called with alarming news: A police officer was on the way to her house — all because her son had played with a toy gun during his virtual art class. Elliott says she was terrified, especially considering her son is Black. “I never thought: ‘You can’t play with a Nerf gun in your own home because somebody may perceive it as a threat and call the police on you,’” Elliott said. Elliott’s son, Isaiah, was later suspended for five days and now has a record with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and a mark on his school disciplinary paperwork saying he brought a “facsimile of a firearm to school” — even though he was in his own home doing a virtual class. The “gun” was obviously a toy, painted black and green with “Zombie Hunter” on the side. Elliott lashed out at the school, arguing that it was irresponsible to call police given the frequency of police violence against Black people.
