New York Times Headline Writers Declare Amazon Union Vote Free and Fair
    https://jacobinmag.com/2021/04/new-york-times-headline-amazon-union-drive-alabama
The New York Times’ Amazon union election coverage is a tale as old as time: When workers vote to back a union, employers blame outside agitators. When workers reject a union after a massive anti-union campaign by the boss, it was the workers’ own free choice.

    Ivory Coast’s Su-25s - The Sharks Won’t Bite Again
    https://www.oryxspioenkop.com/2020/08/cote-divoires-su-25s-sharks-wont-bite.html
In late 2004, the two damaged Su-25UBs were brought to Abidjan Houphouët-Boigny IAP, where they joined the two Su-25 single-seaters that had sustained minor damage as a result of French reprisals. It appears that Ivory Coast was interested in bringing the aircraft back into service, but any attempt at doing so would have required parts or entire subsections to be brought in from abroad, something the arms embargo imposed on Ivory Coast obviously prevented. As a result, the Su-25s continued to languish in the air force hangar. [1]

An Evolutionary Discovery That “Literally Changes the Textbook”
    https://scitechdaily.com/an-evolutionary-discovery-that-literally-changes-the-textbook/
To do the study, Chédotal and his colleague, Filippo Del Bene, used a groundbreaking technique to see the nerves connecting eyes to brains in several different fish species. This included the well-studied zebrafish, but also rarer specimens such as Braasch’s gar and Australian lungfish provided by a collaborator at the University of Queensland.

‘I’m doing better’ - Fighter details brutal finger injury suffered at CFFC 94
    https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2021/4/2/22364598/khetag-pliev-details-finger-injury-suffered-cffc-94-mma-news
“What happened was Khetag got the takedown — now this is all on film — when Khetag has the takedown, the fighter reaches under and grabs his glove and starts pulling illegally on his glove and it caused Khetag’s finger to lodge,” said Patterson. “Once the finger lodged and they came back up to their feet and started throwing punches, Khetag has a very hard punch. When he threw the punch, the finger was already bent and caught in there, it caused the finger to sever.

Under Capitalism, the Deck Is Always Stacked Against Unionizing at Companies Like Amazon
    https://jacobinmag.com/2021/04/alabama-amazon-union-drive-results
The failed Amazon union drive in Alabama is a stark reminder of a basic fact of life under capitalism: it’s always easier for bosses to destroy a fledgling unionization effort than it is for workers to get together and fight for their own interests.

Revealed: Republican-led states secretly spending huge sums on execution drugs
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/apr/09/revealed-republican-led-states-secretly-spending-huge-sums-on-execution-drugs?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
Documents obtained by the Guardian reveal the full extent of the spending blitz that American death penalty states have embarked upon as they try to restart executions delayed by the pandemic. The findings show that Republican leaders are not only willing to run roughshod over their own state and federal laws, but are also prepared to spend lavishly in the process. The most jaw-dropping outlay has been made by Arizona, a state in which Republicans hold both chambers of the legislature and the governor’s mansion. A single-page heavily redacted document obtained by the Guardian records that last October the department of corrections ordered 1,000 vials of pentobarbital sodium salt, each containing 1g, to be shipped in “unmarked jars and boxes”. At the bottom of the document, the record states: “Amount paid: $1,500,000.”

Amazon warehouse workers reject union bid in Alabama
    https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/amphtml/news/vote-counting-start-amazon-union-175629472.html
Amazon workers voted against forming a union at a warehouse in Alabama, handing the online retail giant a decisive victory and cutting off a path that labour activists had hoped would lead to similar efforts throughout the company and beyond. After months of aggressive campaigning from both sides, 1,798 warehouse workers ultimately rejected the union while 738 voted in favour of it, according to the National Labor Relations Board, which is overseeing the process. Of the 3,117 votes cast, 76 were voided and 505 were contested by either Amazon or the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, which led the organizing efforts in Bessemer. But the NLRB said the contested votes were not enough to sway the outcome. The union said it would file an objection with the NLRB charging the company with illegally interfering with the union vote.

Google Blocks Advertisers from Targeting Black Lives Matter YouTube Videos
    https://themarkup.org/google-the-giant/2021/04/09/google-blocks-advertisers-from-targeting-black-lives-matter-youtube-videos
Other social and racial justice terms that Google Ads blocks advertisers from searching include “homosexual” and “sex work.” “Muslim fashion” is blocked for ad placements, but “Christian fashion” and “Jewish fashion” were not at first. Both “Muslim parenting” and “Jewish parenting” are blocked, but “Christian parenting” was not, offering millions of videos and channels for ad targeting. At the same time, Google Ads permitted advertisers to use anti-Muslim hate terms like “White sharia” and “civilization jihad” for searches. The blocked social justice terms returned the same responses as profanity and other violations of YouTube’s rules.

The French army is testing Boston Dynamics’ robot dog Spot in combat scenarios
    https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/7/22371590/boston-dynamics-spot-robot-military-exercises-french-army
Spot, the quadruped robot built by US firm Boston Dynamics, has appeared alongside soldiers during military exercises carried out by the French army. The robot was apparently being used for reconnaissance during a two-day training exercise, but the deployment raises questions about how and where Boston Dynamics’ machines will be used in future. Pictures of the exercises were shared on Twitter by France’s foremost military school, the École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr. It described the tests as “raising students’ awareness of the challenges of tomorrow,” which include the “robotization of the battlefield.” A report by French newspaper Ouest-France offers more detail, saying that Spot was one of a number of robots being tested by students from France’s École Militaire Interarmes (Combined Arms School), with the intention of assessing the usefulness of robots on future battlefields. Boston Dynamics’ vice president of business development Michael Perry told The Verge that the robot had been supplied by a European distributor, Shark Robotics, and that the US firm had not been notified about this particular use. “We’re learning about it as you are,” says Perry. “We’re not clear on the exact scope of this engagement.” The company says it was aware that its robots were being used with the French government, including the military.

    https://news3lv.com/news/local/unlv-president-students-demand-apology-from-nlvpd-following-black-lives-matter-event
There are new developments in the controversy over a video showing North Las Vegas Police riding motorcycles on the UNLV campus without permission and immediately after a Black Lives Matter spoken word event. Students believe the officers were trying to intimidate them. It happened on Tuesday night, and on Wednesday, the university's president, Len Jessup, demanded an apology from police. On Thursday, the Black Lives Matter group came forward and also demanded an apology. Vera Anderson was one of the poets speaking that night and she says that the police presence was out of place.
